It wasn’t just fans and teammates who came out to mourn Jose Fernandez on Wednesday — the pregnant girlfriend he left behind also attended the funeral procession.
24-year-old Maria Arias arrived to St. Brendan’s Catholic Church in Miami — flanked by hundreds of supporters paying their final respects to the beloved Marlins pitcher.
Just before his fatal boat crash, Fernandez posted a picture of Arias to announce her pregnancy to the world — with a caption that read, “I’m so glad you came into my life. I’m ready for where this journey is gonna take us together. #familyfirst.”
Marlins manager Don Mattingly and owner Jeffrey Loria were also in attendance — along with Barry Bonds and Giancarlo Stanton.
Fernandez and 2 others died in an early morning boat crash on Sunday. The crash is currently under investigation.
